About a year ago, Boston Dynamics released a research version of its Spot quadruped robot, which comes with a low-level application programming interface (API) that allows direct control of Spot’s joints. Even back then, the rumor was that this API unlocked some significant performance improvements on Spot, including a much faster running speed. That rumor came from the Robotics and AI (RAI) Institute, formerly The AI Institute, formerly the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, and if you were at Marc Raibert’s talk at the ICRA@40 conference in Rotterdam last fall, you already know that it turned out not to be a rumor at all.

Today, we’re able to share some of the work that the RAI Institute has been doing to apply reality-grounded reinforcement learning techniques to enable much higher performance from Spot. The same techniques can also help highly dynamic robots operate robustly, and there’s a brand new hardware platform that shows this off: an autonomous bicycle that can jump.

Peggy Smedley and Rachel Salamone, chief people officer, Boston Dynamics, talk about the hiring process and what it looks like for candidates. She says the company is not unique in what it looks for in candidates, rather it is universal, which is part of what makes the competition for talent so challenging. It looks for ability, aptitude, and attitude.

They also discuss:

  • If Boston Dynamics use AI (artificial intelligence) tools in the screening process.
  • How Boston Dynamics is attracting and interviewing the younger generation.
  • How Boston Dynamics is addressing the hybrid work issue.

Waltham robotics pioneer Boston Dynamics is entering the increasingly crowded market for humanoid robots.

For years, the company has released wild videos of its human-shaped robot, Atlas, performing tricks such as dancing, doing back flips, and starring in a Super Bowl commercial. But the hydraulic-powered “research platform,” as the company called it, was never intendedfor sale.

Until now. On Wednesday, Boston Dynamics announced it has created a commercial version of Atlas that will be be sold — eventually — to the manufacturing industry.

Goodbye to the hydraulic version of Atlas and hello to the electric model designed for commercialization. That’s the message from Boston Dynamics Inc., which yesterday retired the older version of its humanoid robot after 15 years of development and today showed a preview of its successor.

“The next generation of the Atlas program builds on decades of research and furthers our commitment to delivering the most capable, useful mobile robots solving the toughest challenges in the industry today: with Spot, with Stretch, and now with Atlas,” said the company in a blog post.

Now that humanoids are all the rage in the robotics industry, Boston Dynamics on Tuesday officially retired theirs. The Hyundai-owned firm has always marched to the beat of its own drummer. Even so, it’s an odd decision as funding pours into the category by the hundreds of millions.

Venturing an educated guess, I would say that today’s Atlas retirement is less about endings than new beginnings. Most likely, the hulking humanoid is gracefully stepping out of the way of whatever is coming next for the firm.

At noon on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad Troopers responded to a residence in Barnstable to assist a SWAT Team comprised of local Cape Cod police officers with a situation involving an armed barricaded subject.

Upon their arrival the Troopers learned that the subject had fired upon officers with a rifle and barricaded himself inside the residence. The Troopers deployed two PacBot 510 tracked robots and a Spot four-legged robot to assist in locating the subject inside the residence. Deployment of the remote-controlled robotic platforms allowed the team to safely gather crucial intelligence and provide situational awareness of the suspect and the home’s interior.

The Troopers conducted interior and exterior robotic operations to systematically check the house – first deploying the Spot robot through the two top floors of the residence and cleared them.  The Troopers then deployed Spot into the home’s basement, when the male suspect suddenly appeared from a bedroom armed with a rifle.

The Troopers would later discover that that Roscoe had been shot three times by the suspect and had been rendered inoperable.

Robot dogs are here. But why?

You might think you already know Spot, the robot dog from Boston Dynamics. Maybe you saw a viral video of it opening a door, or dragging a truck, or dancing. But now, this robot has hit a HUGE milestone… Spot got a job! These robots are now out in the real world doing real work, for fire departments, factories, defunct nuclear power plants like Fukushima, ancient ruins like Pompeii, deep mines, and, more controversially, police departments. You might already be starting to see robot dogs walking around, and even if you’re not, they’re starting to affect your life.
